Coulton Cup Replay 6th Feb 2010

Layton Juniors again fielded a strong first match and we matched them pretty much like for like in the first half although I feel we let it slip alittle in the second half by not being hungry enough for the ball and not challenging for the ball soon enough, and allowing them time to settle on the ball and execute their passes. It was a great effort all round with Ewan Satterthwaite winning the Man of the Match trophy for putting in to practice the half time team talk and attacking the ball and reading the game which he does so well. Robert King won the Harriers Man of the Match trophy with his sheer grit and determination throughout the match to press for the ball and give support play. Robert put numerous great crosses in to the box and was once denied a goal by hitting the post.

It was encouraging to see the passing developing and becoming more fluent perhaps as a result of the training sessions emphasizing passing and moving. Oliver Seers had a great game and again looked threatening up front and was unlucky not to have scored more goals. If we tightenen up at the back we would conceed less goals. Once our attacks have been broken down and stopped, our play is switched to defence. We need to switch on to begin defending as far up the field as possible and try to slow their attacks down and in doing so buy time for our team mates to get back to defend as an organised team in numbers. That means even though you may have just run to the other end of the pitch in an attack, you need to immediately get back and defend. It is hard work out there but it is what needs to be done. It is not just about banging in the goals at one end it is equally important to keep them out of our goal. Both teams played well but we lost the Cup match. The flip side of the coin is that we automatically now go in to the plate competition.
